Thanksgiving Is Over – Can Christmas Be Far Behind? by Peter Cowie - President Bobcaygeon Helps

The days get shorter, the weather turns cooler, the leaves change colour and start to fall. The folks at Bobcaygeon Helps, our Food Bank are planning the Christmas “Hamper” Program for our needy clients – your friends and neighbours. From its humble beginnings over 20 years ago when the Anglican Rector, David Burrows, kept a few groceries in his office. The Food Bank has grown to currently serving 451 clients, 31% of whom are children 15years of age or younger. Today, as well as giving away all donated food items, we spend approximately $38,000 annually on our food programs. Although it is still referred to as our Christmas Hamper Program, a few years ago we started to give out gift cards to our local supermarkets rather than actual hampers of food. Our clients are delighted with this change as they are empowered to choose exactly what they wish. As well, on “Hamper Day”, this year Saturday December 17th, clients with children under sixteen are invited to visit our Santa Shop to pick toys and gifts for their boys and girls. All these gifts / toys are donated by the generous people of Bobcaygeon and area. To see the joy on the faces of our clients as they choose gifts for their children is a seasonal highlight for our dedicated volunteers. Soon containers will be available throughout the Village where toys can be donated for Bobcaygeon Helps (Food Bank) families. As well, cash or cheque donations for our food program can be made to Bobcaygeon Helps, Box 133, Bobcaygeon. Charitable Tax Receipts will be issued for donations of $10 or greater. Over the same period, other charitable organizations may also be collecting toys for families throughout the City of Kawartha Lakes. These families are not clients of Bobcaygeon Helps and we wish these other organizations every possible success.

On behalf of our Board, Officers, Volunteers and most importantly our clients, THANK YOU to the Bobcaygeon community for their ongoing, generous support of Bobcaygeon Helps. Together we will make a difference.
